Here is some news update by Mayor Nutter about the Aftermath of Hurricane Irene:

Mayor Michael Nutter visits the set of “Good Day” to discuss the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, its impact on Philadelphia and answers a question about whether the storm was over-hyped. “We’re pretty much back in operation,” Nutter declared after a busy weekend.

Nutter said trash and recycling collection will resume today, albeit with some delays.

As for the river drives, Martin Luther King Drive was back open, and most of the Kelly Drive had reopened by late in the morning rush.

“Spectacular job by all of our public servants, both in the city government, SEPTA, PECO, all of the utility companies,” the mayor said.

He noted that PECO still has about 4,000 people on the job. The Monday night estimate on customer outages in the city was 17,000, and a few hundred thousand in the region. They’d already put power back on for 250,000, Nutter said.

“PECO is really doing a great, great jobs, and I ask folks to be patient about that. All city services are pretty much back up and running,” he said.

“The citizens of Philadelphia were wonderful – just did a fantastic job,” Nutter said. “…People paid attention, they took the warnings seriously, and that’s why we were able to come through this in such a spectacular fashion.”

As for criticism that the storm was “overblown,” including a column in Monday’s Daily News, the mayor said he hadn’t seen the story.
